Rbt. Sps. /// Artist Statement March 2008

My preferred materials and process come directly from my rural Kentucky surroundings: I employ various discarded surfaces from abandoned, derelict homes, and a myriad of unique objects
found at local thrift and junk stores as surface material in many of my pieces. The work sincerely satirizes an anti-intellectual, depression era inspired aesthetic specifically regionalized to the Kentucky area.

Living in the rural South in the United States, one is bombarded with an ever-present
fundamentalist Christian culture and a not-so-underground drug and alcohol abusing subculture. Nestled between
these social poles is a shared environment of country entropy. The work I create also balances conceptual themes pulled and appropriated from these two local
social archetypes.
